Maria Papaioannoy is a community builder, storyteller, and event curator based in Cobourg, Ontario. She is the founder of Northumberland Women—now evolving into NEW, a platform dedicated to creating meaningful, women-led experiences that connect, inspire, and amplify voices across Northumberland.
Maria’s work has always been rooted in one belief: people helping people. That belief has guided her across a career that spans media, entrepreneurship, advocacy, and public speaking.
A graduate of Centennial College’s Radio and Television program (Class of 2000), Maria began her career as an on-air reporter and producer with OMNI Television. That foundation in storytelling continues to shape everything she does—from hosting and producing community segments to crafting narratives that resonate both locally and beyond.
In 2016, Maria and her husband made the move from Toronto to Northumberland, where she quickly became deeply engaged in the community. Her leadership experience includes serving on the board of the Port Hope & District Chamber of Commerce, and later as its President, roles that strengthened her ability to bring people together and lead with purpose.
Maria is also the founder and spokesperson for Rights 4 Vapers, Canada’s largest consumer advocacy movement for tobacco harm reduction. Through this work, she has engaged directly with policymakers, organized national conversations, and continues to push for balanced, evidence-based approaches to nicotine policy. Her advocacy has expanded into The Safer Nicotine Project, reflecting a broader commitment to honest dialogue and public education.
At the heart of Maria’s work today is her strength as a communicator. An accomplished public speaker, she has competed and won at multiple Toastmasters levels and served as President of the Cobourg Toastmasters Club. Whether on stage, behind a microphone, or leading a room, Maria brings energy, clarity, and a strong point of view.
Now, through NEW, Maria is focused on curating experiences that go beyond traditional formats—events that spark conversation, build community, and create space for women to lead, share, and grow. From live productions and panels to creative collaborations and storytelling-driven gatherings, she is building a platform where ideas turn into action.
Northumberland Women may have started as a radio show, but today, it’s something bigger.
This is the work.
This is the evolution.
And this is just the beginning.
